What information do I need to place a background check on someone?
You can run a background check with as little information as a person’s first name, last name and date of birth. The Social Security Number is optional for most background checks, but is required for the county criminal background check and the SSN verification and address history trace.
Do I need a person’s permission to run a criminal background check?
In most cases criminal records are considered to be public records. However, if you are ordering a criminal background check for employment screening or tenant screening, then you need to make a clear and conspicuous disclosure in writing to the person that you are requesting a consumer report and you need to obtain written authorization for the request from the person.
